WORRY Poppies

by Jeremy Ohringer

I did not think I would be sharing paintings for this culminating celebration of The Midwives. My “project” had nothing to do with painting. I am a director and teacher and so am often focused (at least in part) on the goal ahead. It is my job to look into the future and keep us on track for what the piece will be.

Yet, as I navigated this year with the support of my midwife (The Midwives), I found that my project ultimately became myself. The project was (and is) to follow my intuition, my interests, and to focus on the journey, the practice, and the act of creation over the outcome, the final product, or the goal.

I created these poppies at the beginning of quarantine, amidst the end of a relationship, and during a moment where my career and so many other aspects of my life came to a soulful pause. These poppies grew out of this moment of stillness.

Out of all of the things I made for my project this year, I am most proud of these poppies and the transformation they represent.
