3 Sisters

An adaptation of the classic by Anton Chekov

By Anne Walaszek and the Playwriting Students at University of Wisconsin-Parkside

This term, I focused on applying to graduate programs and honing my artistic statement. Out of those conversations and curiosities, I formed an inquiry around playmaking:  can modern theater be retooled as a vehicle for self-discovery, rather than for commercialization and production? Parallel to my applications, I worked with playwriting students at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and collaborators in Chicago to workshop an adaptation of Anton Chekov's Three Sisters that put this inquiry into action. The night before our opening, I received all of my rejection letters and immediately questioned the value of the work. The night of our opening, I was shown the value of the work. The phrase I keep hearing is "rejection is redirection" and, like Irina, I feel a very clear direction to continue the work.

ABOUT THE PLAY
Four siblings share their parents’ home as they slowly mature into adulthood. Their lives are quiet—almost boring—until an army brigade takes up residence in the house. In this third act, a fire has taken over their small town and the meeting with mortality galvanizes the three sisters into action.
